A New Discovery

St. Andrew, Jamaica. Visual Artist

NOTHING

Watercolour. Spray paint.
A word that held nothing
but a mind that held everything.

Scroll
I always used "nothing" to describe my art and my life.
But that "nothing" was never nothing.
It was everything I could not define.

I called my art nothing because I have no words to define it. Yet, the word itself is a paradox. It is the label I use for a crowded mind, the weight I carry and a way to cope with the noise. The space is not empty, it is simply everything at once.

That is why I reach for every medium instead of sticking to one. Acrylic for the things I could grip. Watercolour for the things that slipped through. Spray paint for the things too big for a brush. Refusing a fixed style keeps me from being in a box. It leaves an open room to discover, to breathe and to keep growing.

The Origin

Nothing
born from
everything

A crowded mind gave me the silence and the noise at the same time. The paradox of feeling everything when there were no words for any of it. That is where the paintings started. Not as a choice. As a necessity.

Everything I
reached for

Each piece became a mirror. A new side uncovered; a new lesson left on the surface.

I reached for everything to distract my mind, only to realize leaving the work undefined was the most important choice I made.
NOTHING
The Process

Three mediums.
One space.

Acrylic work with faces and a yellow flower
Acrylic

To Layer and Build

Acrylic is for the things I can grip. I build it up, layer over layer, until the surface holds a weight I could not put into words.

Watercolour

To Yield

Watercolour is for the things that slip through. I set the water down and let the pigment decide where it wants to go. The lesson is in letting it.

Freedom

Spray paint is for the things too big for a brush. Nothing stands between me and the surface. Only distance, pressure and movement.
